Balancing your hormones with reflexology

Do you become mad woman just before a period or burst into tears at the drop of a hat? Is your cycle all over the place due to stress? Would you like to conceive but it just ain’t happening? Here are some tips on balancing your hormones from our reflexologist Ally Brown

If your monthly cycle is out of kilter or you suffer around period time, reflexology is excellent for balancing your hormones. Particularly good at puberty or during the menopause, it can be equally powerful at any time in our lives – especially when emotions play havoc with our hormones. 

Ally Brown often works with couples who are trying to conceive. When you don’t know when you are ovulating, reflexology can help rebalance you to a regular cycle so you have more chances of conception. If you’ve got completely stressed from trying to conceive, reflexology helps you unwind and relax so your body and its systems function at their optimum. And if you’re having IVF, massaging the reflex points can bring oxygen to the body as it aids circulation, helping to create a healthier environment for embryo transfer.

Here is Ally’s step-by-step guide to using hand reflexology for balancing your hormones – practise it on yourself, or get a partner to give you a restorative hand massage! Many disorders are related to an imbalance of stress in our lives so here is where she starts in this self-help guide. Under stress the body is unable to replenish its nutrients effectively, making us more vulnerable to disease (dis-ease). Practising these techniques will help to generally relax the body, allow it to recover and boost the immune system.

How reflexology works

Reflex points on the hand can be stimulated to clear energy flows around the body – the reflexes correspond to organs, glands, structures and parts of the body and stimulate the body’s own healing mechanisms. Reflexology works on the nerve endings sending a message to stimulate action or promoting a healing response – there are a total of 17,000 touch receptors and nerve endings in the palm of each hand!

Work the following areas using small ‘caterpillar walk’ type movements or gently pulsing or massaging over the area:

  1. To work on stress/anxiety stimulate the spine reflexes. ‘Walk’ up and down the thumb from the wrist to the thumb (the long red line in the diagram) and work over the brain (the small red dot on top of the thumb).
  2. Balance the endocrine system. The hypothalamus and pituitary gland – known as the master gland of the endocrine system – are the small pink spot in the centre of the thumb.
  3. Then focus on the reproductive organs. The reflex point for the uterus/prostate and ovaries/testes is directly above the bony part of your wrist (above being towards the fingers)

    on the back of your hands and the palm (both sides of the hand). Massage the two red spots on either side plus the line in between which is the reflex for the Fallopian tubes. The penis reflex is on the back of the hand at the very base of the thumb where it meets the wrist shown on the diagram with the red dots and the vas deferens in between.

  4. To boost the immune system and increase air exchange/release toxins and oxygen flow into the blood, the lung reflex are the channels beneath and between each finger to a third of the way down.
  5. Also work the lower back reflex in the second red line shown on the diagram for the palms – backwards and forwards, gently massaging. And the yellow dot on the back of the hand diagram is the reflex for the hip, pelvis and lower back – it is important to increase blood flow to these areas needed for supporting pregnancy or easing pre-menstrual, menstrual, peri-menopausal or menopausal symptoms.
