Why do we need Vitamin D?

Vitamin D, known as the ‘sunshine vitamin’, affects almost every aspect of our health. It is important for bone health; muscle function; growth and development; mood, memory and brain function; heart health; balanced inflammation; reduced cancer risk; immune health and to reduce autoimmune risk. Furthermore, a recent study of more than half a million people found that those with good levels of vitamin D had lower risk of death from any cause.

Around 1 in 5 people in the UK are vitamin D deficient. For most of us, we just can’t get the sun exposure needed to produce adequate amounts. And did you know that it’s impossible to get enough vitamin D from food sources? So for many of us, supplementation is key.

As a result, Public Health England advises that breastfed babies or formula-fed babies on less than 500ml a day should be given a daily vitamin D supplement of 8.5 to 10 micrograms (µg). Children aged 1-4 years should take 10µg. Then from age 5 upwards children and adults should take 400iu of vitamin D daily, particularly from October to March. But many health experts believe these supplementation levels are set too low, especially when you consider that your skin can produce 10,000iu in response to 20-30 minutes of exposure to midday sun.

As many people are already low or deficient in vitamin D, they will need to supplement with higher levels (1,000iu daily) to get their levels back up.

The Vitamin D in this product comes from Lanolin (sheep’s wool). Therefore it is suitable for vegetarians but not vegans. However, if you are vegan you can choose Nutri Advanced Vitamin D3 vegan drops instead.
