Solar plexus chakra: Chamomile works on the solar plexus chakra so its psychological effect is to relieve a build-up of stress and tension. The solar plexus is the vital centre of our psychological needs and wants, the focus both of our urge to control and desire to nurture and our search for recognition and sense of self worth.

Wood element: Chamomile is associated with the wood element, regulating liver chi and chi (or qi) in general – hence its effectiveness in pain relief of headaches and migraine and its calming effective, for example for children’s tantrums. Its key actions are to regulate chi in the stomach and intestine, stimulating bile production and promoting digestion and bowel functions – hence its benefits for digestion and problems such as dyspepsia, epigastric and abdominal distension or pain, nausea, travel or morning sickness, flatulence, constipation, spastic colon, colitis and IBS. Chamomile also regulates the chi in the uterus and harmonises menstruation.

The Roman chamomile plant
Roman chamomile is a sweetly aromatic evergreen perennial. It grows close to the ground and is sometimes called ‘the plant’s physician’ for its positive effects on surrounding plants. The flowering head comprises a yellow disc with white florets – popular with bees and butterflies – and it has grey-green leaves. The essential oil is extracted from the flowers, and the flower heads are often dried to make chamomile tea. The yield is quite small at 1% which is reflected in the price.

About Materia Aromatica

Materia Aromatica supplies oils essential oils harvested by growers and distillers of organic crops, buying as much as possible from smaller farms or family enterprises. This has the advantage that these farmers distil their own freshly harvested materials themselves. They carry out steam distillation on a small scale at low pressure in stainless steel tanks to maximise the essential oils’ therapeutic value and to retain the individuality and life force of the crops from which they originate. Every batch of oil is dated, numbered and tested to ensure the quality of the oil.

Prices

Oils from organically grown or wild-crafted crops are generally more expensive, as the term itself is a guarantee of purity and wholeness. Organically grown crops must adhere to strict guidelines so the oils are sold in their pure form, without dilution or the addition of any synthetic oils. Picking, carried out by hand in the wild, requiring extra labour, is time consuming and costly. This explains the price variations between two oils of the same species such as Materia Aromatica’s organic and wild varieties of Lavandula angustifolia.
