Music to get in the zone

So if you want to sit down and get in the zone, and maximise your memory, concentration and focus, what music is best to listen to…?

Listening to Mozart improves your memory, it’s official. When 84 people were split into three groups, one listening to a one-minute clip of Mozart’s Eine Keline Nachtmusik, another Mahler’s Adagietto and a third sitting in silence, those who’d heard the Mozart recalled more of a list of words that they’d been asked to remember.

The researchers, from London Metropolitan University, believe the reason is that Mozart’s music flows like the sentence structure of the English language. ‘Mozart’s music is full of self-contained and bounded phrases, similar to the typical structure of words and sentences. Mahler’s music flows in a way that is very similar to how we hear a foreign language being spoken.’

It seems that Mozart’s music affects us as no other music does. It has also been given credit for improving our IQ, and studies have suggested it reduces stress in dogs and cuts the risk of seizures in epileptics.
