Our yoga instructor Hannah Bimpson ponders on how yoga reaches so much more than just the physical…

We all know it’s important for our physical health to engage in some form of exercise, but it can be really difficult to find the motivation to continue going, week in week out, to the same exercise class. Especially if you don’t really enjoy it!

So why does yoga seem to be growing more and more popular? What I believe is that although most people are initially drawn to yoga for the physical benefits, they soon start to feel the impact it has on the rest of their lives. Many can’t even put their finger on what it is that’s changing in their body, they just know that without their yoga class they can’t get through their busiest day of the week, or they find it impossible to wind down at the end of the day.

Physically yoga will build your strength, lubricate your joints and increase your flexibility but mentally it will allow you to take time for yourself, slow down the constant chatter running through your mind and really connect to the present moment, even if you’re not aware of it.

Simply by shifting your awareness to taking long, deep breaths, for even just one hour a week, you will automatically start to connect your mind and body together.

As hippie-dippie as it may sound, that is all it takes to really change your life. That simple hour spent in the present moment, encouraging the connection between your breath, and the combination of movement and stillness in the postures, will enable you to take this calming technique into your daily routine. You are learning how to disconnect from stressful situations, keeping calmer and happier in all aspects of your life.

A regular practice is all it takes for you to carry that incredible feeling you have at the end of class into your day-to-day life. Yoga is so much more than just a form of exercise… why not find out for yourself!
