Restorative yoga is one of the most deeply relaxing styles of yoga, designed to give you the ultimate replenishing 'me' time.
When the pace of life is fast our minds move fast too. When we are also attracted to a strong, fast-moving yoga practice we can easily overstimulate ourselves — and our nervous system takes the beating. We may end up feeling easily overwhelmed and tired, with a racing mind, and the potential to get sick more quickly and more often.
The main focus of restorative yoga is that by relaxing in poses, with the aid of props, without strain or pain, we can achieve physical, mental and emotional relaxation. Restorative yoga classes are very relaxing and slow paced. Props, like blocks, bolsters, blankets and straps, are used so that you are supported in your pose comfortably for extended periods of time. The relaxation is all the more delicious because it is enhanced by candlelight, handmade natural organic bolsters (pictured), eye pillows and (soon to arrive) weighted blankets and therapeutic essential oils diffusing through the room.
Restorative yoga helps stimulate our parasympathetic nervous system. The parasympathetic nervous system is responsible for slowing your heart rate and breath and increasing bloodflow to your vital organs, among other things, which promotes a relaxation response and reduces stress hormones in the body. The result is you feel a sense of motionlessness and shapelessness – conscious relaxation…
Restorative yoga helps to combat the physical and mental effects of everyday stress, and eases common ailments such as headaches, backaches, anxiety, and insomnia with the use of restful poses and deep breathing techniques.
