It’s as simple as this… wear your clothes a bit longer! So many of us are programmed to wash clothing after just one day’s wear, but if you just extend this for a second day the saving you make is staggering, according to BAM, suppliers of the bamboo socks we stock at The Hub. BAM are passionate about helping the planet and all of us reducing our carbon footprint, and here are the facts and figures they’ve compiled:

  • An unbelievable 14.8% of the emissions created throughout a T-shirt’s lifetime are created by sticking it in the washing machine (based on BAM’s 2019 footprint calculations using 50 washes at 30°C in an average-sized modern washing machine).
  • A single wash at 30°C uses 46 litres of water and creates 600g of carbon emissions. Up to 700,000 micro-fibres are released.
  • Washing at 40°C and tumble drying multiplies the carbon emissions to 2.4kg of carbon emissions. That’s four times the impact. You could drive 11km instead.
  • Washing at 40°C and tumble drying a load every two days creates up to 440kg of carbon emissions in a year. That’s the equivalent of flying from London to Milan and back again.

Washing at 30°C and line drying is good practice, of course, but we could still halve our impact on the planet by simply washing every second wear.

BAM bamboo clothing

We love BAM clothing! We stock their socks here at The Hub, which are made from bamboo, and several of our yogis swear by their yoga wear. Not only are the clothes colourful, ultra-soft, lovely to wear and wash well, they have the very best environmental credentials. BAM was established by medal-wining pole vaulter David Gordon in 2006, with sustainability their core ethos.

The clothing industry is one of the worst for creating worldwide pollution. Bamboo needs half the land cotton requires to produce the same amount of fibre and it doesn’t need irrigation or pesticides. It also absorbs five times more carbon than hardwood trees. BAM have tasked themselves with reducing their carbon footprint to zero by 2030: that’s zero waste to landfill, zero pollution and zero wasted water, and applies to every process from growing the bamboo, to manufacture of the clothes to the way they are recycled. The aim is for a clothing company to be impact positive on the environment.
