How content are you? Being content is definitely a daily skill – and probably taking a bit of work right now for you! It’s so easy to slip into the trap of negativity – but, though there might be plenty to complain about right now, just remember that there is always something to be happy about. It comes down to where you choose to place your focus in any moment and how you want to experience life. If you dwell on happy experiences rather than negative you become more present day by day.

Here’s a lovely exercise that can help you practise the art of contentedness. Sit in a quiet place where you won’t be disturbed and make yourself comfy. It may help to close your eyes…

Think of something that made you happy today.

  • What happened?
  • Where were you?
  • Who were you with?

Relish all the details of that happy happening.

  • What was it that brought this happiness?

Treasure your memory and feel the wave of happiness again. Breathe into these feelings and make the memories grow and become more vivid. Sense it moving through your body, and take deep breaths to savour these thoughts.

Think of three words that you associate with this happy memory, write them down and come back to them so you can luxuriate in this happiness whenever you want to come back to it. Practise this often and you will be making a giant step to the art of living in harmony.
