Creating an altar space to set positive intentions and meditate

Rebecca Marr suggests we should all create an ‘altar’ within our homes. She’s not talking religion here, simply an area dedicated to you, a physical area where you can set your intentions, offer your dreams and wishes, or pray. A special place to go to as an anchor point to feel grounded and connected to your inner self. Somewhere where you might call in abundance, health and wellness – or even, if you are spiritually minded, your Divine, your God or Goddess…

Your ‘altar’ or ‘sacred place’ doesn’t have to be anything elaborate or fancy. You can set up the area on a small table, bookcase shelf or a window ledge perhaps. You may in fact end up with several around your home – for example, one in your bedroom where you light a candle each morning and say your affirmations or prayers, and one in the kitchen or living area where you can come to during the day and place an oracle card as a gentle reminder for guidance or a crystal you’d like to feel the energy from.

What you will need and how to set up your altar:

A cloth or beautiful piece of fabric – any items that feels special or ‘sacred’ to you (such as crystals, rocks, fresh flowers, feathers or candles)

  • Before you begin take a few moments to tune in. What is your intention in creating this ‘altar’?
  • Lay the fabric in your chosen space and begin placing items on it. Think about what each item represents to you. Place all your pieces on the ‘altar’, creating something beautiful and aesthetically pleasing to you. Bring all your love, all your focus.
  • Visit your ‘altar’ every day. You may like to write down your prayers or wishes and place them under one of your objects. Keep checking in with your ‘altar’: it is an extension of you – does anything need to be moved, taken away or added? Bring freshness and newness to your altar by offering fresh flowers.
